Drug trafficking ring bust results in 15 arrests

According to the Berks County District Attorney, Pennsylvania State Police and the Reading Police Department, 15 people were arrested for allegedly operating a drug trafficking ring that was violent. The group reportedly made more than $20 million in drug sales in one year.

Law enforcement officers report that they started an investigation into the ring in Sept. 2017 when they learned of its existence. They believed that the group planned to murder five people in the past 30 days. On Feb. 25, the group planned to murder a rival drug dealer, but the plan was stopped by law enforcement.

On that same day, law enforcement officers raided the home of the rival drug dealer and took four people into custody. Officers reportedly seized 200 packets of heroin. On Feb. 27, officers thwarted a plan to kill the rival drug dealer's brother by establishing a police presence in the location where he lived. They also prevented the murder of another person later the same day by stopping the vehicle in which the leader of the ring was riding. Officers found multiple loaded handguns in the vehicle. Officers say they thwarted another murder on March 16. Officers conducted the bust on March 21 at multiple locations. They recovered weapons, heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine and took 15 people into custody. The drugs were worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Drug charges involving allegations of trafficking may bring stiff penalties if a conviction is obtained. When there are aggravating factors such as selling drugs while in the possession of weapons or attempted murders, people may face decades in prison. Experienced criminal defense attorneys may work to build strong cases for their clients in an effort to obtain favorable outcomes.
